Actress Leilani began screenwriting in 2005 with her first feature screenplay Proud. She started filmmaking when she discovered independent filmmaking collaborative OTTfilms.
Joining at first as an actor and screenwriter she soon found herself in love with a short script called Death of the Dinosaurs and had a clear idea of how it could be best brought to life on screen. Encouraged by writer John Condon, Leilani decided to make her directorial debut. Her film was nominated for a British Independent Film Award.
Since then she has gone on to produce, direct and assist on a number of films, most of which have had global success on the film festival circuit. She continues to act, write and direct and for the past three years has co-run OTTfilms.
Leilani is also a member of The Writers Building, an exclusive network of screenwriters headquartered in Los Angeles.
Death of the Dinosaurs is an epic dinosaur adventure! Made for Nokia Shorts 2006 it was Leilani’s directorial debut.
A mixture of stop motion and VFX morphing were employed to animate some very expressive-faced toy dinosaurs.
After making tests with the FX the film was shot in one day (approx. 8 hours inc. set up.) The edit was a precise and intricate job for so small a film. Distortion was used, in the form of a partial morph, to make the dinosaurs move, blink, and speak. The film was then graded and, using masks and chroma key, moving clouds were added to the original blue sky.
The sound design and voice-over took place later. The Gigantasaurus' roar was put together using a mixture of sounds, which included bear and deer noises. The completed film reached the finals of Nokia Shorts and was nominated for a British Independent Film Award. It has gone on to be selected for film festivals all over the world and along with its sister film Tarot screened at the Short Film Corner in Cannes 2007.
